EqualityOne of the topics touched on at the World View Conference was Equality vs. Equity. Equality in its simplest definition means "the state of being equal or the same." Equality is often a buzz word we hear in terms of how to treat our students, when in fact our students are not equal. They are not the same. They come from different countries, cultures, socio-economic backgrounds, races, religions, etc. So instead of thinking about giving every student the "same" thing, give students what they "need," aka equity.

EquityAs one of the topics touched on at the World View Conference, this image was shared with us and it is a powerful one. Only when the individuals received "equity" could they all see the game. "Equality" did not help all three people. Keep this in mind when you lesson plan, teach, etc. but also feel free to use this image with your students to spark conversation about how and why everything won't always seem "fair" or "equal" because different students have different needs.
