Why is there a picture of salt, you ask? One of the amazing speakers at World View was Dr. Stephen Hancock, a professor at UNC Charlotte, who spoke about SALT teachers.
He describes SALT teachers as those who strive to flavor (nurture differences and respect individuals), preserve (protect cultural knowledge and experiences), as well as breakdown (break down the master narrative of each student and work together with each child). The metaphor goes on to say much more, but please take away some of his most powerful statements in how to both embrace and teach about cultural diversity: "Teachers are the SALT of citizenship." "Strong teachers build strong citizens." "It is not how you are that matters, but who you are." "Stop saying all children can learn and start saying ALL Children WILL learn." It is our jobs as teachers to not only teach common core, but citizenship; and the even larger concept of global citizenship. Think about your students and make an attempt to truly get to know them and understand them - where they come from, their background, their life. This will truly empower your students and your teaching! |
